Find Your Purpose and Become The Box
Waking up on a cold frosty winter’s morning struggling to get out of bed. I wonder if my goals are good enough. Have you ever had that feeling?
We need goals to pull us out of bed excited for the day.
In life humans often overestimate what we can do in a year and underestimate what we can achieve in 5 years. Having a five-year goal is a way to speed up your success and achieve bigger and better things that you previously thought would be impossible.
When we choose to follow short term goals we often lose the motivation to do the small things as we lack the inspiration of seeing the bigger picture.
The corporate world wants to keep us in a box, the world doesn’t work like this. We don’t perform at our best stuck in a box. Your corporate job wants you to go through the day mindlessly ticking each box on your checklist of tasks.
The latest corporate jargon is for you to set SMART goals. This means our goals have to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound (SMART).
Smart goals are often used in the corporate world as a form of box-ticking.
While I agree with setting goals or at least having an idea of where you are heading. Smart goals force us to lack vision and keep us in a box of being attainable.
We need to reach for something unattainable.
We need to be unrealistic in where we want to be and who we want to become!
We need to think bigger!
With smart goals, we lose the motivation to do something meaningful with our lives. We need to be pulled by our dreams rather than pushed by a to do list of chores.
Rather than smart goals, we need to find our own individual box, where we can be the best version of ourselves. We need to find our Ikegai.
Our Ikegai is a Japanese concept which means our reason for being or our purpose. Your purpose is the feeling you get when what you are doing is bigger than yourself. Where you are needed and that there is something better ahead to work for. Where you are good at what you do, and you can help others.
Where you are your best self?
To work out your Ikigai you need to work out four things
1) What you’re good at? What have you had experience and education doing something? Where have we done well or excelled before?
2) What you can be paid for? Where can you solve people’s problems? Where is there a demand for people?
3) What do you love? What are you passionate about? What would you enjoy talking about on a Saturday night?
4) Finally what does the world needs, where is there a global problem you can contribute to?
This will give you your Ikigai.
What was your reason for getting up this Monday morning?
When we look back at our lives on our death bed many years from today, have we lived for something?
Have we achieved a goal and lived a purposeful life? Whether it is improving a community garden patch, raising a child, or changing a social condition, it’s important that we feel that we have made a difference. We have a decision in each moment to ask ourselves. Will this bring me happiness?
Don’t be stuck in a corporate box. Don’t just think outside the box. Be the box.
Create a new box for yourself , where your own unique talents, skills and passions make the greatest contribution to yourself and others
At the start of your day, say I am ready for a day’s work. As if I was going out to do what I was born to do. The purpose for what I was brought into the world.
Instead of smart goals we need goals that will get us out of bed in the morning. We need to find our Ikegai or life purpose. Where we can make the greatest contribution and where we can be our best self!
Do you know your Ikigai or purpose?
1) Our strengths. Do we have specialised knowledge? What are we good at? What skills do we have? Where have we 10,000 hours of deliberate practise or experience? What comes easily to you that is difficult for others?
2) Demand. What problems do people need solving? Where will someone pay you for your time or services? Where are people experience pain or suffering?
3) Passion. What you would you enjoy talking about on a Saturday night or if you had a Saturday morning to yourself with nothing planned, what would you love to spend your time doing?
4) What does the world need? What one of the 17 sustainable development goals could you solve? What's your 'big game'? Looking at these goals is a good way to see 17 big problems that need solving today. Can you contribute to solving them?
Pick two goals to focus on. One with your head and the other with your heart

Your Purpose Or Your Ikigai
What was missing was that I felt like I wasn’t contributing or giving back to the world. I asked myself: ‘Where could I make the greatest contribution?’
How could I find my purpose and track my progress in achieving this goal?
I decided to write a book and give away 20 years of investing knowledge, everything I learnt as a Financial adviser for a FTSE 100 company giving million-pound clients advice on their personal finances. The book is called Millennial Money Mindset
Millennial Money Mindset condenses everything you need to know about investing your money in one single book using a simple five-step method.
I created this five-step money mindset method, whilst giving financial advice to million-pound clients.
The financial advice company I represented refused to allow me to publish this book and still work for them!
I decided the knowledge in this book was too important not to be shared with others so I decided to leave that company.
I set up my own money coaching business called Money Tipps® and published the book myself.
Millennial Money Mindset® was shortlisted by the Financial Times writing prize and was an Amazon bestseller!
