STUCK IN TRAFFIC? VOTE NEIL DOIG TO GET OXFORD MOVING! OXFORD DESERVES BETTERâVOTE GREEN, VOTE NEIL DOIG MAY 1ST!
đŠLetâs Fix Oxfordshireâs Traffic ProblemâFor Good
Oxford is a beautiful city with a big problem: weâre stuck in traffic.
Oxford's street layout dates back over 800 years, with many roads developed in the 12th and 13th centuries, long before motor vehicles were even imagined. The city grew around its university (established in 1096) and markets, with narrow winding streets meant for walking, carts, and horses.
Roads built in the 1200s werenât designed for cars, and now weâre all paying the price. Whether youâre driving your kids to school, commuting to work, or waiting endlessly on the Cowley Roadâcongestion is costing us time, health, productivity, and peace of mind.
We need practical, modern solutions that make getting around easier, safer, cleaner, and more enjoyableâfor everyone.
As your Green Party candidate for Oxfordshire County Council in the May 1st election, Iâm committed to transforming how we move. Here's how:
đŽââïž Get Kids Cycling, Not Car-Dropped
Letâs make it safe and easy for children to cycle to school. That means:
Protected bike lanes that connect homes and schools
Bike parking at every school gate
Education and support for families new to cycling
Fewer school runs = fewer cars on the road = healthier kids and cleaner air.
â° Ditch the 9â5, Embrace Flexibility
Traffic isn't just about roadsâit's about how and when we work. During the 2012 Olympics, London cut congestion by encouraging flexible hours. Letâs apply that to Oxfordshire:
Support employers to adopt a 4-day workweek or staggered start times
Promote core-hour working (e.g., 10amâ3pm)
Launch a âGreen Employerâ badge for traffic-reducing workplaces
Happier staff. Less rush hour. Cleaner skies.
đïž Build Better Local Living
Inspired by cities like Paris, we can design Oxfordshire so everything you needâschools, shops, parks, healthcareâis within a short walk or cycle.
New homes near jobs
Local hubs for services and community spaces
Mixed-use planning to reduce long commutes
This means less time in trafficâand more time living.
đ żïž Reimagine Park & Rides as Green Hubs
Oxfordâs Park & Ride sites are underused and undervalued. Letâs transform them into modern mobility hubs:
Secure e-bike hire and lockers
Solar-powered EV charging stations and build solar panels over the car park to provide renewable energy.
Revenue used to support better bus services
These become not just transit stopsâbut thriving local renewable energy centers.
đ Buses That Actually Work
To cut congestion, public transport needs to be reliable, fast, and affordable:
Real-time tracking and digital info at every stop
More frequent rural services
Clean, electric buses
Integrated ticketing with rail, bike, and scooter options
Oxford deserves a world-class bus system that people actually want to use.
đ Traffic Filters That Work With People
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) have divided opinion. Letâs fix whatâs not working:
Use smart tech to manage traffic flow in real time
Ensure uninterrupted access for emergency services and those with medical needs or doctor appointments
Co-design with residents, not top-down decisions
We want cleaner air and stronger communitiesânot one at the cost of the other.
đł Reclaim Roads as Public Space
Letâs look to Barcelonaâs Superblocks as inspiration. We can turn congested streets into places of joy:
Mini parks
Playgrounds
Outdoor cafés and market spaces
Where thereâs gridlock today, there could be greenery and connection.
đĄ Bring Transport Justice to Rural Oxfordshire
This isnât just about Oxford City. People in rural Oxfordshire need better options, too:
On-demand community minibuses
E-bike superhighways linking villages
Train stations with safe scooter + bike parking
Smart rural bus stops with live updates and real connections
Letâs end rural isolation and car dependency for good.
Weâre Not Just Managing Traffic. Weâre Redesigning Life
A better Oxfordshire means:
đ± Cleaner air
đ¶ Fairer, faster commutes
đ Safe streets where kids can walk, ride, and thrive
We have the ideas. We have the community. We just need the political will to make it happen.
